PEFC WOOD: What it means and why it is important

In recent years we have heard a lot about PEFC wood (or alternatively FSC) and now, fortunately, wood with this important certification is required in almost all public contracts. The introduction of the Italian 110% eco-bonus has also given a strong push in this sense, being one of the minimum criteria to be respected for wood.

But what does PEFC mean?

🌱 An unsustainable forestry

Over the years, the wood has been subject to legal and illegal massive logging which has led to global logging. This means that the cutting cycles did not care at all about the growth rate of the wood, actually exceeding it clearly causing innumerable damages. The downsizing of the earth’s natural lungs (remember that trees absorb CO2 during their life cycle) is the most obvious effect, but so is the reduction of biodiversity that has threatened the existence of many animal species and indigenous populations.

In order to face this increasingly catastrophic problem in a univocal and unequivocal way, in 1998 the PEFC certification was established by European forest owners and the wood industry to protect forest sources.

🍃 Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes

PEFC is a certification organization for sustainable forest management, i.e. the correct and sustainable management of the forest, both from an ecological, economic and social point of view.

But what does it translate into? The observance of fundamental concepts such as:

Respect for the fauna and flora that populate our forest resources, with consequent protection of their biodiversity

Scrupulous attention to the growth rate of the wood: so much wood is taken, so much must be planted

Reforestation of areas affected by deforestation

Safeguarding these natural resources has benefits not only for these ecosystems, but also for humans:

trees absorb Co2 and produce Oxygen, provide shade, filter pollutants in the air, contribute to psychophysical well-being and are necessary for the production of countless products (Asphalt, Paint, Toothbrush, Deodorant, Cosmetics, Detergent, Chewing gum, Piano keys , Medicines, Corks, Sponges, Car wax, Hair dye).

🌲 PEFC wood

Treating PEFC wood means developing, implementing procedures to track the purchase, monitoring, production, sale and registration of certified materials.

For all its structures, Grosso Legnoarchitetture uses only PEFC-certified wood, which therefore respects all the principles of sustainable management. We strongly believe that a respectful, careful and intelligent use of the raw material that nature has to offer is the key to a prosperous future.

Building in certified wood, therefore, not only contributes to sustainable resource management but also has a positive impact on the environment but also on the reduction of CO2.
